Open Studios is a fun and mostly free weekend. Discover, see, be inspired, learn, partake and purchase art from artists, creators and makers in their studios across Melbourne’s west.

Participating Artists welcome visitors to view their art practice in the friendly environment of their private studios. Catch a glimpse of the stories behind the scenes of where art is created, from traditional and contemporary painting, photography, jewellery, sculpture, textile craft, and print making to live music, spoken word and puppetry.

Take a self-guided tour in and around the multiple venues. Pop into one of the Pop Up Studios; which are temporary studio spaces housing an array of artists to be discovered.

Open Studios began with a group of inner west artists wanting to showcase their work. The first Open Studios took place as a part of the 2005 Big West Festival. In 2007, Maribyrnong City Council agreed to manage the program, which now occurs annually and continues to be a part of Big West Festival bi-annually. The program continues to grow each year, and in 2009 extended its borders to neighbouring western regions councils. In 2011 the program is presented by Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham City.

This year over 50 artists (SUCH AS DIANNE BEEVERS, MATTHEW BRACKEN AND JESSICA MORRISON) and studios will be involved, including MREAM, Post Industrial Design, Red Girl Mosaics, John Howard, Sue Manski, Janet Knight, Trocadero Art Space, Footscray Community Arts Centre, Louis Joel Community Centre, Iramoo Community Centre and Kindred Studios...AND DIANNE BEEVERS, MATTHEW BRACKEN AND JESSICA MORRISON.

The program consists of a number of activities to see and do, including artist talks, demonstrations, workshops, puppet shows, live music performances AND A VISIT WITH DIANNE BEEVERS, MATTHEW BRACKEN AND JESSICA MORRISON.

Artists' studios in Melbourne’s west will be open to the public on Saturday 26th to Sunday27thNovember 2011.

The exhibition Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor celebrates 100 years of International Women's Day and features 100 stories of great Australian women, with 100 brooches made in response to these stories by 100 of Australia's most talented women jewellers.

And yes I was one of the lucky ones invited to be apart of this exciting show.....My great Australian was Quinton Bryce...and yes I did feel the pressure she is very gutsy!!

Fine silver, sterling silver, 24ct gold and glass enamel, 2011.

When researching Quinton Bryce I was overwhelmed by her countless personal academic and political achievements. From lecturing at T.C. Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland to becoming the Governor General of Australia. Her 43year career to date has been full of many challenging and powerful roles. All of which at a closer inspection have been to better the conditions for others and in particular women and children. It is this focus that I found my inspiration to make the brooch.

I chose the form of a flower to represent the fragility and beauty of those she strives for. Each fine silver petal in this form represents a year in her career.

To depict her journey I have used the colours of International Women’s Day, through the use of glass enamel I have applied these colours with a painterly approach.

Through white, purple and green, I have told her story.

I usually don't include many making shots but when I found myself in this situation I thought it should be documented. For a piece that looks so organic i planned every detail. You can see Quinton's career timeline and my colour coding. Phew....

Finally, images of my treasure range. Woohoo! It has only taken me a few years, hopefully they have been worth the wait.

In this work I am bringing two very basic elements together. Put a hole in an object, thread it and it becomes a bead, decorative, portable, beautiful no matter the material, and cuttlefish casting. The simplest of casting, one of the most immediate and organic mediums a jeweller could use.

Pieces that are designed to keep evolving with their wearer.

Hmmm, so I have some catching up to do.... anyhow....

Figment was an exhibition developed and launched by e.g.etal about this time last year. E.g.etal transformed into a city of bright lights and shadows. They pushed the normal displaying traditions and displayed the artworks on projectors which beamed beautiful silhouettes onto the gallery walls. Interesting and hot (in temperature not in a Paris Hilton way)!

Above are the silhouettes of my drawings and pieces (but not the two silhouettes furthest to the right). It felt a little revealing to see your sketches not only on display but huge and on the wall. Although i must say i did cringe when i saw my drawings so there naked on the wall to share with everyone, i did like the connection of the projected images and my concept for the body of work, 'Day Dreaming'. Yes very dreamy.

Although i haven't included any clear images of the work stay tuned as i am continuing to develop this body of work so i will save them up for another time not so far from now.

The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewellers

It's Huge!!!!!!!!!! Well done Andy Lim (the man behind this awesome publication) this was a mammoth job and it works beautifully!!!! The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewellers, is as you can see a two volume look at contemporary jewellers (1044) and their jewels from all over the world... and its spectacular. In fact i haven't made my way through it yet! I keep getting lost in thought, picking it up (which you have to limber up to do as it weighs 13.5 kilograms) and putting it down....it has so much to look at. I happily suffer from gold and silversmithing over load. So many clever individuals in the world!
(this is my page one....wooooooohooooooo!)

How this came about.........the short story. Andy wanted to make a book about jewellery. See i told you it was going to be concise, and contacted all the jewellers he knew and invited them to be involved in this book. He then asked them to nominate three other jewellers to be involved, then their nominations were to nominate two more jeweller each and then... they were to nominate one lucky last jeweller (short yes, but i feel have made it sound complicated). The jewellers that chose to accept this mission had to design two pages of whatever their hearts desired and then send it back to Andy to put together..............and then a year later this is what we received in the post!
A snippet of why we were nominated. The lovely Kathryn Wardill nominated me and I nominated the talented and spunky Coconut Lu. Sorry it is so small...(and fuzzy).

'...very Emily Dickinson' is the piece i made for the 2006 Cicely & Collin RIGG Contemporary Design Award. Sally Marsland won that year and it was well deserved with her beautiful body of work 'Jewellery made with holes'.

In the past the Field Trip series has been about the exploration of vitality and energy in nature. Field Trip ‘…very Emily Dickinson…’ follows this emotional response, but it is now the beginning of decay and the impermanence of nature that is depicted. By contrasting the perishable delicacy of the subject and the rigidity and strength of silver in which it is captured, the piece attempts to ‘snapshot’ a moment in time; the ephemeral becomes permanent, glazed in a brittle layer of enamel.

(my artist statement for this body of work)

My work is initially inspired by an instinctive emotional response to my natural surroundings. This delight is tempered by a closer observation of both the structure and randomness in its form and colour.
By working with easily malleable materials, such as wax and plasticine, I can quickly and intuitively create objects inspired by, but not mimicking, natural forms. Once cast, silver becomes a neutral canvas for the play of colour and surface via the use of enamel. The fluidity, fragility and unpredictability of enamel creates a controlled randomness in the finished object. This makes the piece snapshot-like in its capturing of an organic construct.

... and yes i did grow up next to the beach.

When an explorer first enters on the investigation of so remote a place as bestia demens, they find themself as it were in a new world. They can scarcely meet with any fixed points from whence to draw their analogies.

Nevertheless, Princess C and Lady J, who went out this day with their everriculum, had the good fortune to belay one of the animals which had been so much the subject of their speculation; an idea of it will best be conceived by the attached representation, without which, the most accurate verbal description would answer very little purpose, as it has not similitude enough to any animal already known, to admit of illustration by reference.

Pieces of Eight Gallery’s current exhibition Baked Not Fried has been extended for one week only- a great opportunity to catch the exhibition if you have yet to view it!

Baked Not Fried showcases the work of several contemporary artists and jewellers who employ the technique of enamelling in inventive and fantastical ways.

From the delicate and shimmering to the humorous and poetic, Baked Not Fried reveals the diversity of enamel work being explored in both contemorary jewellery and object form. Each artist delivers exceptional work characterised by the expressive freedom found in their use of enamel. The exhibition debuts German jeweller, Tabea Reulecke and Austrian jeweller, Steffi Kalina showing their work for the first time in Australia, exhibiting alongside local enamellists Jane Millard, Jess Morrison, Katrina Tyler, Bridie Lunney, and Katherine Brunacci. Baked Not Fried exposes the shift in the way enamel is being used today - in its application as a surface and more importantly in its materiality. Look closely at the edges of the pieces and you will see the poetic subtleties of this delicate process - and what can only be planned by not planning.

I’m confused.

I’m sitting with Jessica Morrison in her sunny Melbourne studio and we’re having a conversation about her Beasts. She’s describing her work as referencing the everyday and earthiness and explaining that they are tools for living. I’m confused because these Beasts, who are witness to our conversation, appear to have been borne of an absinthe fuelled liaison between Faberge and Merric Boyd. The sculptural animal forms of the hand-built vessels do have an earthiness to them but the ornate embellishments, the gilt surfaces, the precious stones, the gold leaf and enamel have me looking for the Imperial Eggs from which they must have just hatched.

Just as Morrison successfully combines the rustic and the decorative, so too her creatures are at once wild animals and yet again the tamed members of a fantastical menagerie. The vessels simultaneously reference the sacred reliquary and the domestic caddy. And her rings and neckpieces are evocative of tribal ceremonial practices as well as the cheap thrills found in a gumball machine.

It would be easy to simply describe this work as whimsy, but these beast-vessels are serious in their roles as protectors of their contents. A bejewelled kangaroo king sits proudly astride his wombat steed, protecting his cargo from marauders. The King of the Jungle stares heavenward in contemplation of the secrets contained within his belly. And the Peacock, the symbol of pride and vanity hides his tail in respect of his responsibility as guardian.

I’m still slightly confused but equally enamoured of these Beasts. Although they would not be out of place in a vitrine of archaeological artefacts, I think I would prefer to see them on my kitchen bench guarding my precious store of Camellia sinensis.

We all love a monster. Pieced together, never quite ‘right’, brought to life by a sick and twisted mind, a little bit Dr Frankenstein, a little bit Dr Moreau, single minded, focused upon the creation of a unique creature.
So when a chimera is created, melding those lynchpins of Australiana, a kangaroo and a wombat, how do we react?
If you know Jess Morrison’s work you feel like laughing. Laughing with the sheer joy and humour of the macabre world she imagines. At first you see her kangaroo, decked in bling, scratching his tummy as he ‘rides’ his wombat bodyguard but you soon realise that all is not quite, well, normal. As if they had been in a freakish accident, say through the matter transporter in the movie ‘The Fly’, they have become a new species, the hybrid Kangambat, still recognisable in the sum of their parts but happily moving on as strange ‘conjoined twins’.
Decorative boxes, reliquaries, keepsake and trinket boxes, are a tradition of the gold and silversmithing arts. But rarely will you see three boxes that seem, so full of personality, to enjoy their role so much. The tiger may bite or roll kittenishly on his back to have his tummy rubbed. The peacock, by being both 2 and 3 dimensional, depicted in both a traditional and cartoonish puddle-duck-like way, will raise his head when you lift the lid.
Jess is one of those rare people whose work, even when pushing technical and artistic boundaries (and occasionally the boundaries of taste!) will always bring a smile to one’s face. Her work, though gestural and immediate, is backed by thoughtful planning and modelling. The subject matter is always close to her heart, or in the case of the teeth, grounded in dental genetics. (If you get her at a free moment ask her to recount “Adventures in South American Dentistry”- you will soon understand her obsession with teeth.) What could be grotesque is instead happy, joyous and endearing, without being saccharine and cloying. Her tigers still have claws, her teeth still have bite, her golden dog might just be about to squat for a pooh on the green enamel grass of a silver ring. Her work is always trembling with life, on the verge of laughing, blooming or running away, and is certainly never staid or dull. A bit like Jess really.

Woohoo the beasts and i have made it through to the other side and now they reside happily at Craft Victoria for the next month before traveling to Pablo Fanque in Sydney late June. Many thanks to everyone that came to help me celebrate the opening of my first solo show and of course many, many, many million billion thanks to those that helped me make it all happen!

I'm very excited (scared, panic-struck.....) my exhibition is opening on Thursday night, 17th of April at Craft Victoria 31 Flinders Lane in the City, 6 'til 8pm. The lovely Francesca Valmorbida of Pablo Fanque in Sydney will be launching this crazy ship!

In 'Beast' I am exploring the creating of pieces capturing the 'spirit' and attributes of my favourite animals but with my own interpretation as to what these maybe! Tough little wombats, kittenish tigers, bling kangaroos and cocky peacocks, turning them into reliquaries, boxes in which to store a favourite object, keepsake or memento.

Having had years of painful dental issues, I've , also, worked 'Beast' into making personal votive talismans. If they won't behave in my mouth I will make replacements! Animal teeth made of enameled silver and gold leaf, and brass and gold leaf, strung together on string. I have finished the collection off with a group of rings, peacock feathers, dogs, tigers and hearts, what every girl needs to protect her.
